Real time location at automotive production sites

Atlas Copco, the world’s leading industrial tool manufacturer, and Ubisense, the world’s leading provider of location solutions,have announced that a second European Automotive Group has entered into an agreement to deploy its Manufacturing Solutions Suite which incorporates Tool Location and Assembly Control Solution across its production sites. The solutions have already been deployed at three of the companies sites, in a deal worth approx 1million Euro.

The FARO Laser Tracker's ability to provide real-time measurements directly against the CAD data enables engineers to instantly visualize deviations from the nominal. The Tracker has dramatically reduced the time required to certify large parts, tooling and machinery while also resulting in substantial quality improvements for repairing and overhauling structural components for the US Air Force's largest aircraft, the C5 Galaxy.

To better understand the "value" of accredited certification, the global association of accreditation bodies, the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), surveyed businesses in 40 different economies to clarify the drivers for seeking certification, the factors involved in choosing a certification body, and the extent of any benefit derived from the certification process.

On 30th September 2011, Duwe-3d AG carried out tests at their centre of excellence for 3D metrology in Lindau, Germany, to extensively examine the connection between the new FARO Edge measuring arm and the new version 12 of the PolyWorks software. PolyWorks V12 is the standardised solution for visual and tactile coordinate measuring technology and for the processing and evaluation of three dimensional data in industrial applications. The result of the test series confirmed the excellent integration of the latest generation of the FARO measuring arm into the PolyWorks environment.

UK-based specialist pipe measurement technology company Optical Metrology Services (OMS) Ltd has successfully completed an on-site internal weld inspection survey for a major oil company. This is the first time that a combination of laser, video and ultrasonic inspection methods have been used in a production environment to inspect the profile of root welds on pipes. The survey was carried out by OMS' US-based operation.

Metrology is now part of every industrial project, and embedded metrology is the emerging standard. Embedded metrology has become an essential tool for manufacturing. French based G²Métric is fully involved in the development and integration of measurement solutions for Metrology Assisted Assembly and does significant work with aerospace manufacturer Airbus.

A manufacturer of universal 3D measuring machines is using high precision laser profile scanners and laser displacement sensors from Micro-Epsilon to measure the surface profiles and position of rotary pistons.

A single PLC module proved to be the key in unlocking the production efficiencies at a pioneering hydraulic specialist. The technical support team at LC Automation suggested Plymouth-based Kawasaki Precision Machinery (KPM) would reap numerous benefits by utilising a Mitsubishi MES module (manufacturing execution system).
