Over the last 30 years or so, we have seen the rise and dominance of the 3 dimensional coordinate measuring machine in manufacturing. Driven by the need for accurate measurement to engineering drawings and for process control on the shopfloor, CMMs have become the universal instrument of choice for QC and production functions.


At the association’s recent Annual General Meeting, Geoff Highley was proposed and accepted as the new President of the GTMA. Having been involved with the GTMA for the past 12 years he is well known to many of the members, and he will retain the office of President for at least the next two years. He says: “I am pleased to have the support of a board that has a wealth of experience, history and heritage, but with a clear plan for the future.”

Verisurf Software, Inc. and InspectionXpert Corporation  are partnering to provide integrated InspectionXpert and Verisurf functionality designed to accelerate the process of completing first article inspections.  The new partnership provides quality inspectors with an integrated solution to streamline their inspection process that combines the value of both 3D model based and 2D drawing based inspection information.

Wednesday 19th September saw the Rt Hon David Willetts MP, Minister of State for Universities and Science, welcome Atlas Composites managing director Shaun Moloney and a guests to the official launch of Nottingham Universities new £3.5 million Institute for Advanced Manufacturing.

A new multi-million pound centre of excellence is being created in the UK to help combat the world’s growing £2 trillion challenge of corrosion. With governments and industry around the world alarmed at the annual cost of worldwide corrosion, Exova is to create the specialist, £3million Corrosion Centre to help identify and develop future solutions.

Norbar Torque Tools  officially opened its new premises at Wildmere Road, Banbury on Wednesday 19th September. The 170,000 sq ft production site is over three times the size of their present Banbury head office and factory.

Creaform, leader in portable 3D measurement technologies, has  introduced Go!SCAN 3D,  a handheld white light 3D scanner featurings intelligent hybrid positioning and yielding great results when used in both industrial and non industrial applications.


Rexcan CS+ is a fully automated 3D scanner which  integrates a turntable with four degrees of freedom for simpler set-up and more comprehensive data acquisition.

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the UK's National Measurement Institute is offering the UK's first service for the verification of Articulated Arm Co-ordinate Measurement Machines (CMMs) to the ASME B89 standard used by arm manufacturers.


Demand for calibration services is expected to be high over the next 2 years in Europe, as regulations become more stringent and quality more essential across verticals. With competition in the European market being intense, turnaround time - without compromising quality - will be a key criterion for end users in selecting a calibration services supplier.
